Tips XC bike setup for Alafia and Boyette?
« on: June 30, 2007, 08:28:25 AM »
My current bike is a '07 Giant Anthem 2.  I absolutely love the bike however on steep drops like those found in the Abyss and Bridges I feel very uneasy as though I'm too far forward on the bike.

The current stock bike setup has me pretty stretched out as it is.  I can't move very far back on the seat before my elbows are at full lock.  Do you have any recommendations to setup this bike so I can properly tackle these drops?  Would the fix be as simple as a shorter stem (current stem is a very long Easton EA30, so I do have plenty of room to move backwards)?

Appreciate the input.

I had the same problem, my first solution was just to go faster, and it helped  Until I took an endo at high speed (Thanks fox for making a solid helmet).  Anyway take the bike to your LBS and have them do a fit for you.  It may be something as easy as moving you seat back or changing out your stem.  I took mine to AJ's and the hooked me up with a thomson 90mm stem.  What is the stock on your anthem?  My trance was 110mm.  Either way Aj's was great in fitting me up. Give them a call.

changing the stem and/or moving the seat forward on the rails will probably help alot. But if you can do it, a fit by a good shop is probably the best bet.

Don't be afraid to really stretch it out.  There have been times when my stomach is flat on the seat and my bum is getting massaged by the knobs on the Mytho's. These drops may not be that steep, but don't hold back.  There, I said it. Yes,  you can have sex with your bike!!!    :o   :o   :o

Try lowering your seat, giving up some pedaling power for control is worth it in my book. This will enable you to get back quicker and easier. I used to have my seat up for maximum pedal stroke, and soon found out how much it effects the feel of the "*pit" on your bike-I lowered the seat and gained control. Good luck.

yeah, for Alafia and Boyette I lower my seat accordingly. Since Alafia is more technical, I lower the seat more then I would at Boyette. It just makes it easier to get the rump back quickly.
