What's the break in period for disc brakes ?
« on: July 08, 2007, 10:43:22 PM »
I have a new set of F&R Promax disc brakes and they stop terribly. Beyond the obvious "cheap disc brakes" what is the break in period ? How long should it take until they break in ? It feels just like a car with new brakes.

Thanks

Not really sure on that one, it may be an adjustment issue. Did you apply them before you went off of the bridge?

LOL! I guess I should have known that you wouldn't know based on the mark on your forehead. ;D
You were wearing a helmet right?

Umm, yeah. If I weren't I'd be in bad shape. The helmet is what saved me from any serious injury and allowed me to walk away.  ;D

My friend used his brakes on one of the little bridges in North Creek and wiped out. It was just after a rain and the bridge was still wet. Luckily he was unharmed.

Moral to this story:  Damp wood, bad news.  I did a nice wipeout on a bridge at the last Trout Creek club ride.  No brakes were involved although too much speed and a slight bend in the bridge were factors.  I kind of wish I had used my brakes if that counts for something. ;D
It's not just fun, it's an addiction!

Manufacturer recommended break-in period for my Avid brakes is 20-40 complete stops.  I imagine it would be similar for any disc brake setup.  Did you check the install guide that came with your brakes?
