Another one bites the dust!!
« on: July 21, 2007, 10:05:35 PM »
Yes thats right it looks like my road bike is toast!!  As I was in the parking lot someone was nice enough to back into my car when my bike was on the back.  The front wheel is screwed, the cranks are bent, and I'm not sure about the frame yet.  AJ's is taking at look at it to see if it can still be ridden.  On the up side, they could be paying for a new set of wheels, and cranks and maybe a new frame.  Maybe I should go with the new SRAM Red groupo?

Dang!!! Was it a cyclist who damaged your ride or is some citizen about to get educated  and sticker shocked at the same time?

strikingly enough a cyclist.  She had a specialized roubaix on her roof rack.

Benji,
Sorry to hear about that.  Incident or not, it is a pain dealing with insurances.  Hopefully he/she will pay out of her pocket right away.  If you are going ot deal with the insurance company, start getting written estimates on your bike from more then one LBS.  Use the highest of course.  Even if AJ's can fix it, I would much rather have the insurance company try to write me a check for a new one.  Maybe you get to keep the old one too.  Good luck and keep us post it in case it happens to others.

A buddy of mine backed over his old gary fisher hardtail hookooekoo years ago in his garage and claimed it on his homeowners insureance and got enough cake to purchase a pro caliber with all XTR and a white brothers fork! It weighed only 23 lbs! And he got to keep the old bike.  Needless to say he made out pretty good!

Depending on what kind of baller road bike you have, you'll be better off if you seek replacement as opposed to repair.  They will give you a depreciated value for your bike...depending on how old it is.  They won't want your bike.  You get the check and keep your bike in most cases.

The bike is just over a month old with about 150 miles on it. It is a Giant TCR.  So far the frame is good but they still have to take more measurements.  It looks like the front wheel just needs to be trued out.  Still no word on the cranks.

MAke sure they check the fork and the head tube cause if it got your wheel it may have damaged the front end.  Just a note from an outsider.

well if the fork got damaged I would have noticed it right away. It's Carbon, as far as the head tube AJ's says it looks fine But will run a few more measurements to be sure.  I guess it will be ready tomorrow, I hope.

prefer not to go with a loaner for now.  I'm still getting used to the bike I would hate to mess that up now.  Besides I made it to the Hole in the fence ride.
