Need cassette Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: August 08, 2007, 04:51:33 PM »
Hey bike gods lend me some of your wisdom. I am having problems with my gearing. If I am riding in 5th at say 10mph it's to easy and I am getting dead spots. Then If I shift up to 6th it's almost to big of jump......... Feels like i am going from 5th to 7th.... My set up is Sram x7 shifters, Sram x9 rear, and Sram 990 11-34 cassette...

have you shifted through the gears to make sure it is going into every gear without skipping any?

I'm no mechanic but I'm willin' to offer up some possiblities. Slowly spin your crank and examine your front rings and cassette for any bent or out of alignment cogs or teeth. Then slowly spin the cranks and watch the chain roll off the cassette and look for stuck or twisted links in the chain. You can also inspect each chain link with your fingers to check that they are flexible. The problem sounds like it may be adjustments to the shift cables or the derailleur also. Does it only happen in the middle front ring or all the rings?  And as SFG asked, does it only happen when shifting in these gears or all your shifts?  Good luck.

I would examine the cassette very carfully. I have been running the 990 cassette for about a year and a half. I have bent two of them. SRAM warranteed it both times, but it sounds like the same symptoms that I had.

You may have to take the cassette off to notice.
