crash!
« on: August 29, 2007, 09:46:13 AM »
I had me a serious crash in the pits at Croom the other day!

Hard to explain where I was but I will try--

When you first head into the big section of pits in the loop after the 8 mile bailout... Well first of all, you come to a easy little downhill with kinda a cliff on the side.  Then you come to where I crashed. It is a skinny downhill on the side of the pit. You start downhill then it rises up like a jump almost, then it goes downhill real quick.[and did I mention skinny with drop-offs on the left side!]

Bottom line is, I was stupid. I peddled fast from the top so I could hit the rise and jump into the bigger downhill. It worked and I jumped real good and landed fine and then was flying down the trail when I hit a root that sent me into the right side wall--which in turn sent me off the drop-off on the left!! My speedo registered 30mph on the downhill.
I was then going full speed off the edge toward a tall fat stump with the tree laying next to it.

Rather than hit it head-on I released the bike and turned myself around in the air so that my back would take the brunt of it. And it did. I hit it like a ton of bricks. I was instantly thankful that there were no slightly pointy appendiges on the stump or I would have been a goner.

For how fast I was going and what I hit, I didn't get hurt that bad. I mean I am covered in big bruises and scrapes but I am thankful for just that.

Glad you are ok.
I did a face plant on that "easy little downhill" last fall.

FYI: A camelback full of liquids will take a whole lot of impact out of landing on your back!
We see the world not as it is, but as we are.

no landed on my helmet, which by the way cracked.  Apparently I was out for a bit too.  I pick up my bike tomorrow with my new wheel set (industry nine xc wheels!!)

Glad you didn't get hurt on that one--sounded like a bad one.

This is my week for eating it I guess...I had a pretty good one on my mountain board as well!! I had made a new jump, a pretty good size one, and thought it was all ready to go. So I hit it and jumped pretty good but when I hit the landing all 4 of my wheels just stuck in soft dirt! Dirt doesn't actually taste too bad.
