monkeyboy
« on: October 18, 2007, 07:43:05 AM »
I just got a single speed bike and am curious about what gears to run on my next mountain trip. Right now for our trails I am running a 32X16. It will be tough for me because I like to spin.. Any advice will be appreciated! 8)

When I had my bike singulated last year I spent some time in the Georgia mountains on a 34x18. Rode Pinhoti, Bear Creek, Bull Mountain and Winding Stair that way. I had to tighten my pedals so my cleats didn't pop out on the upstroke and the steep climbs felt like I was gonna rip my cranks and legs off at the same time, but I cleaned everything I tried.

I'd suggest going to at least an 18 tooth cog.

The bike is an IRO that i purchased from ells. It is a steel frame with 26 inch wheels. I had ridden the bike on several occasions and decided to buy it and personalize it.  Harvey those gears that you were turninig would make for a hell ride for me! Were you out of the saddle alot? I need something that would be a more comfortable spin.

Yeah, I was pretty much out of the saddle whenever I was climbing, grinding it out.

I got mine from a customer that just was not able to ride a ss so what he had me put on it was a 32-17 which is what I rode at the SM100 painful but bearable.  It really depends on the terrain that yoiu are riding in Fl 32-16 would probably not be too bad its not up here for most riders.  At the SM100when ever I was riding w/ another sser I asked them what gear they were running and 32-18,19,20 were the answers and I think I remember one guy telling me he had a 22 in the back.  But it really comes down to you and how hard you want to pedal on the ups and how fast you want to try to pedal on the downs.  I guess start w/ the 32-16 and then make changes as necessary.  Sorry I couldn't be more help;)

Bob Wilcox rides a 34/19 at Croom.  I ride a 39/16 but I am more of a BMXer than most.
