Helmets
« on: November 24, 2007, 07:46:13 AM »
Are'nt helmets required at Wilderness? I witnessed three groups of people (12-14 total) thatw weren'nt wearing them. One of them was two parents and their daughter. I know this is an old subject revisited but I would nerver ride without my helmit offroad and 95% of the time on the road. I'd never let my kids ride without one! I'd hate to see our trails closed because of some bonehead that is using his head for a battering ram.
If you don't crash occassionaly, you're not riding hard enough!!

It is a hard rule to enforce, but yes, helmets are required for all who ride at Wilderness Trails.  Trail Stewards and Mountain Bike Patrol are always telling people without helmets that it is mandatory to wear them there.  Alafia has a box of loaner helmets for people without, but WT has yet to do this.  Probably because there are so many entrances it's hard to have a pick-up and drop-off point.

I thought they were, I knew they were at Alafia and theother off-road trails  but wasn't sure about WT. I usually say something in a nice way, not sarcastic, but I still usually get a nasty response. It's bad enough not to care for yourself but I definately can't understand not making your kids wear one. Not everyone reacts that way, a few honestly say they didn't know and say thanks for the headsup.

The rangers usually have helmets in there trucks, but as Garry said it is a very hard rule to enforce. I have heard rangers letting parents know that they will be ticketed if there children under 16 are not wearing helmets.

It always amazes me how some people think that the are not vulnerable to getting hurt.

It is just amazing how thoughtless those people are. We will just have to keep trying to educate people--together we can help stamp out helmet ignorance.

Don't go for the bait Ken!  He is convinced that wearing a helmet infringes on his freedom of choice, and overall coolness. It is either that or he isn't worried about his wife and kids having to spoon feed him and wipe his butt. ;)

They already do all that for me Gregg!

And yeah--when riding in Croom with only a few friends, who mostly wear helmets, I am attempting to appear cool to them by not wearing a helmet. Just between you and I though Gregg...it is working--they think I am so cool!! ;)

Know what you mean Chisel, Makeup and mountain bikes don't seem to go together. Except for chicks on spokes. Couldn't help it FactorE. It's all good.
