A few weeks back drb81 intoduced me to curb surfing and I'm embarrassed to say how much fun it is and even further embarrassed to say how much time I devoted to it the other day at the Alafia parking lot. Must be me trying to get in touch with the skateboarder of my youth. At least it will help me stay on those Carter fingers.
I'm also newly devoted to learning how to carry a wheelie........any tips from the pros? What gear, body position, places to practice where the neighborhood kids don't laugh at you?

you want to be right on the edge of falling over backwards and use your rear brake modulation to keep you from going over.

Way out in the middle of nowhere would be safe so you're not laughed at.

Get into your middle ring up front.

Get into a good solid gear in the back.  not too fast spinning not to mashy mashy.

Pull the bars in coordination with a power stroke it must be timed perfectly.

Find the sweet spot.  Keep both fingers on both brakes, sometimes it helps to stop the front wheel spinning.

and then pedal.  Once your good at finding the sweet spot you can shift while you do it.

HOWEVER.  I recommend doing this on flat pedals till you learn it.  I have had one too  many slip and cant clip out falls in front of people.  VERY EMBARASSING.

Dont be ashamed of curb surfing.  I think its one of the things I did that really did help to give me some serious balance on the trail.

After all, avoiding a crash and riding certain trail features is about understanding the balance between man and machine.  You have to fist learn to ride slow and in control, total control, before you can go fast and not lose control.  Thus the reason I hardly ever crash.

Curb surfing.

Flat pedals takes the fun out of it.  :D

And also takes out the entertainment value for those witnessing it when someone can't unclip.

I watched someone do the fall over backward wheelie thing in their driveway a few days ago. Maybe now that someone will quit beating me up for the time I did it in the parking lot at alafia 3 years ago!

I agree.  I try to keep my wheels on the ground.  Unless of course they're going over my head as I'm doing a header into the ground.  ::)
