Hello -- At about 1 pm Sunday rescue crews were headed into the new trails at Boyette. Word around Boyette was that a woman was hurt riding alone on Garry's loop, which is a new black diamond trail near Sidewinder, Swamp Thing and Woods trail. Some other riders eventually found her and it took a while for rescue crews to get there. A fire truck, ambulance, paramedics vehicle, sheriff's deputy and eventually a large all-purpose rig showed up.

Can anyone confirm what happened and whether the rider was okay? Was he/she a Swamp member?

Folks should take care of their own safety and be smart.  If in fact this person was on Garry's Loop that is just crazy because it is not cut in yet.  It has dangerous sections to it because it is UNDER CONSTRUCTION.  There is not even a well defined path to go through it.  If it was SWAMP Thing that she was injured on then perhaps she was riding over her ability.  It is a higher Blue trail.  There is no shame in walking a portion of trail that one does not have skills to accomplish.  But, when emergency rescue is called it is all or nothing from what I have been told by others, so it could look, or sound like a whole lot more than what it was.  Now, one person whisper the story to another, and let that person do the same to the other, and soon there will be a dead body out and the large cat of Boyette is having dinner.  Just kidding a bit, but it does seem the story gets bigger with each post.

I figured I'd check in and see if anyone had posted about this yet. Unfortunately Garry, it was Linsey that was hurt and I'm not really sure if we were on Garry's loop or Swamp Thing. It was the benchcut section we groomed that last workday near the grassy double track where we stacked the wood. The section was finished but the rain had softened the bottom so much that when she went down the compression sunk her about 3 inches into the clay and the bike shot out from under her and she went face first into a tree. She was in full pads and hit helmet first but because the bike went out from under her she caught the tree with her eye and face as she went down. Kind of a closeline whiplash. Luckily she is doing fine after a short hospital stay for a cat scan on her head and neck. She's a tough cookie and a swamper so she'll be back after a couple weeks of recovery. We definitely were not riding above our ability just a bad choice on riding conditions. It did take EMS about 45 minutes to get back to us and luckily her injuries were not life threatening.

I need to thank a fellow rider that came to our aid just after she fell. I can't remember his name but he rode all the way back to the parking lot and then brought EMS right to us. He also then made sure her brand new Epic and gear got back to my car while my friends and I rode back to the parking lot. Major thanks to him.

I hope that maybe we can figure something out to get EMS out there faster next time there is an injury. It's not a matter of if, but when. If there is anything I can do to help that situation I'm game. Maybe some sort of GPS trail locations to give to EMS or something.  Huh

Again thanks to all that helped and we'll be back out another day.  Wink

Hey Bill,
Sorry to hear Linsey took a hit.  I didn't want that hill added in there, so I tried to block off that section last time I was out there.  Obviously someone opened it again. I'll have to go in and make a more permanent block of it until we can go in and fix it. Actually 45 minutes for EMS in the back country is GOOD.  I have heard where it has taken over an hour at Morris Bridge and Alafia.  Santos?  Oh man, that can be a tough one too.
Hoping for a speedy recovery for her Bill.  Hope to see ya'll on the trail soon.

I'm really glad she's ok. Garry is right. 45 minutes is fast considerining the location. I'd be happy to work with you Garry if you ever wanted to try improve response times. That is basically what I do for a living.

Cool.  I'm in conversation with the land managers often, and have sent an e-mail to see what we can do improve things.  We'll see how things pan out.

It is good to hear that she is doing alright. It sucks when that kind of thing happens.  I can tell you from personal experience that A. on a Sunday morning, you could get as many as eight trucks sent to you at Alafia, and B. It is always better to get hurt near the trail head.

As I said before, I am glad to hear she will be ok.

I was riding out at Boyette this morning and scared myself a good many times on some sloppy wet areas.

Glad to hear that the injuries are minor and everything is ok in the end.

I'm happy to hear that the rider was not badly hurt. It was a bit muddy at the bottom of some of the bigger drops on Abyss today so I can understand how she got thrown on SwampThing/Garry's Loop. I kept thinking, "If that puddle is six inches deep, I'm toast."

Here is to a speedy recovery.

Sucks to hear someone got hurt, but glad to hear she is gonna be OK. I've always said that you won't get hurt on something that is dangerous, it'll almost always be on something smaller that you tend to take for granted. Sometimes you just get scared, then there is the time you go down hard. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I hope everyone understands that portion is actually not finished and is closed.  I had blocked it off from both ends with brush, but it appears someone has removed that so it appears to be open.  Hopefully by Friday I can get out there to do a more secure blocking of that portion until the next workday when we can make it safer and sustainable.  If you ride there and see the path is open please drag some brush or dead limbs to cover it until we can make it safe to ride.  Thanks.

I hope your freind is going to be all right.I was glad to be able to assist in getting EMS to the scene. The added urgency really upped the intensity of the ride back! I discussed emergency response with the deputy and land manager as we rode there. Maybe an ariel map with the access roads layed out to speed up response would be a good idea. Trying to explain how to get somewhere when you only know the trails, not the roads is problematic. Another thing we discussed was the fact that during the week no one is available to escort first responders to the accident scene or even open the gate.   Maybe out of this unfortunate event, a better emergency plan can be created.
The wet clay was like ice yesterday. Anyone that rode those trails could of been in the same situation, myself included.

The rider wasn't on Gary, but actually at the end of Swamp Thing.  Me and a buddy of mine where riding behind the group of three through SideWinder then Swamp T..., ST was very slippery(Clay, Muddy) so we actually ended up walking 50 % of it, after we finished the trail the women and two other riders turned around to re-enter the trail. The young lady would be injured seconds later, (we actually heard the fall) and yelled out then listen for a few minutes to see if anyone needed assistance, didn't hear reply so we kept going..... Ray Charles could see that the trail was in dangerous condition giving all the rain that fell that night, so I have no idea why they went back in. disturbing part was that neither the Property mgr, nor the First Responders had maps showing the back trails and had difficulty finding the riders..... We gave them our updated map, See my post in the suggestion box
