Broken Hand Update
« on: May 09, 2008, 04:19:25 PM »
Just got back from the doctors and the cast is off, the x-rays are perfect, and I'm cleared for normal behavior - no physical therapy, no pins, no braces/splints needed.  I'm hoping to be out at Alafia next weekend for my first ride since the wreck.

It was pretty amazing to see the x-rays from today compared to the ones they took 10 days ago.  The older one had very noticeable cracks and the new ones you can't tell it was broken if you weren't trained to look for it.  He said in 2 weeks it will be as hard as the old bone, but I can start doing all my normal activity right now including biking just as long as I promise not to wreck.

That's good news, just be careful when you get back out there.

I'm shooting for next week to hit the trails - probably going to be out at Alafia on the big bike as I haven't replaced my handlebar on my Blur.  I'm also going to do a short road ride tomorrow around the neighborhood just to see how it feels before hitting the trail.

I went for a quick ride around the block this morning and the hand didn't feel as good as I would have liked.  I still have some soft tissue bruising that is made it difficult to get a good grip on the bar with my pinky and ring fingers.  That said, my hand feels better today than it did the day prior so I'm hoping that this improvement will continue throughout the week enough to the point where I can do a gentle ride this weekend on the trails.

Pick up a good quality roller bladers wrist protector.  It helped me a lot until my wrist was ready again.

I did another ride today and the hand is feeling much better.  I can now actually grab the bar with all my fingers in my left hand and apply a good bit of pressure.  It does hurt a little after awhile, but its not that bad.  I think rotating my bars forward will put them in a better position so I'll experiment a bit with that either tomorrow or Saturday.

I'm still going to shoot for a mild ride at Alafia on Sunday morning.

You might want to ice your hand after the rides to help.
If you don't crash occassionaly, you're not riding hard enough!!

The pain is actually non-existant when I'm not on the bike gripping the handlebar.  I think and adjustment of the bar (rotating it forward a bit) might be the little tweak I need to get more comfortable.  I'll play around with that on Saturday and if all works well, hit the trails on Sunday.

I did my first trail ride since the break and it was a success.  I ended up meeting some friends up at Santos and ended up putting in about 60 minutes and 7 or so miles on the trails which was what I was shooting for.  My intentions were to just stick to the yellows and blues but that ended around 2 miles in when I decided to take on Ant Hill and later on when I did the last bit of Vortex (from the pit back to the jumps) and Sinkhole on the way back in.

When the trails were smooth, my hand was fine and the only real discomfort was hitting stuff fast on some of the downhills (I think the added weight on the hands combined with the harder/faster hits was what was getting me) so I ended up picking my way through those instead of just bombing them.  I think when I get out to the trails next weekend, I should be pretty close to 100%.  This ride was the first one that I can remember where the only time both tires were off the ground was when I was putting the bike up and taking it down from my car...I need to remedy that next time  ;)
