Wildlife
« on: June 05, 2008, 05:59:16 PM »
ok so I already posted about the 3 bore that I saw, but today I saw something new while riding Indian. I heard something taking off into the woods and when I looked all I saw was either a large fox or a small deer. I just remember seeing it's tail up in the air ( like a deer ) and it was roughly the size of a large dog. what other wildlife have people seen out there other then the usual ( armadillos ) ?

So it was probably a deer that I saw. I have seen a raccoon climb a tree right above the trail but I have yet to see a gator. where did you see it?

Bunnies, owls, (not wild but seen: cows, horses, sheep, dogs, cats, chickens), lizzards, frogs, ticks, horse flys, butterflies, nats, carpenter ants, termites, all kinds of ants, and giant grasshoppers like the one that humped my tires at last Tuesday's ride.

seen this thursday 6/5 at flatwoods on main trail: newt, quail, big (2-inch) snake trails

over the course of a year at Morris Bridge, Trout Creek, and Flatwoods: many a feral pig (I'm told that truly wild hogs have pointed snouts and the hogs I see have flat snouts), woodpeckers, 'possums, the same owl several times, black racers, many deer including 2 bucks (they had points!), and I believe I have seen bobcat tracks, although I've never seen a bobcat.

That is right I forgot about the really cool owls! As big as a golden retriever! (slight exaggeration, but really big).

I am no expert on pigs but I have been told that the only real difference between domestic pigs and  wild hogs (boar) is a few generations. They begin to change the color of their skin and fur and they grow tusks etc.... I have seen them out there with tusks.

Bobcats are definitely out there, I saw one on the edge of the woods near the levy on Good Friday. That is the only time that i have seen one.
