Question about work days
« on: June 11, 2008, 09:08:24 AM »
My wife and I have talked about attending some work days, but honestly, I'm not sure I can deal with the heat.  How bad does the heat get to you standing there shoveling or trimming for hours?  Do you guys usually bring a small cooler with water in it?

Also, do you guys ride your bike in with your tools or walk?  At a place like Boyette, that could be a daunting task.

I really don't mind doing my fair share of the work, but I'm not a small guy, and the oppressive heat and humidity really get to me.  How does everyone cope?

For workdays generally folks are shuttled in by truck to the areas that need maintenance.  Some folks like to ride their bikes in and trim as they go along.  You should bring Camelback or a few bottles of water to stay hydrated.  That is a given anytime you do anything extended in the outdoors.  Hydrate for days before you know that you will be out in the elements.  That goes for working in it, or playing in it. Most assuredly in the summer time this is important.  If you feel the heat getting to you take a break, sit down, drink.

Tips for the virgin worday attendee

So you want to attend a "Big K" and you are wondering what to bring what to expect.  Big K as in build your trail Karma day.

1. Wear jeans unless you are doing "ride your bike" and trim day.  Mostly at Croom and sometimes at others palces.  Just ask the trail boss when they come calling for volunteers.
2. Bring your own gloves.
3. Bring bug spray and maybe sun block
4. Bring your camelbak with plenty of water and a snack.
5. Don't have to but if you have small hand held tools like clippers and small saw.  Bring it.  But they will have plent for you to choose from.
6. Bring a smile and a good attitude.
7. Do what the trail boss asks you to do and do not build your own stunts. :-)
8. Always RSVP so that trail boss can get plenty of food for you after the workday.
9. Leave flip flops at home and wear work or hiking shooes.  Or your riding shooes if you riding and trimming.
10. If you riding and trimming, you may want to bring somethign to carry the loppers or clippers.  I use bungy cords and tie to my bike but sometimes that will scratch your frame.

Heat is not much different then when you are riding.  Actually less since you are standing around and working at your own pace.  Yes is manual labor but is not much different then pedaling hard and fast on your bike.  Okay is different but if you don't die from the heat while riding, then you won't die of heat while working.

I'm gonna go find me a pair of work pants like the ones I have for work. Alot cooler than blue jeans.

I remember a song from a few years back that was called ( I'm To Sexy). It is the perfect song for Art. I think it started off with the line. I'm to Sexy for my Bike, I'm to Sexy for my Car, I'm to Sexy for my Shirt. Anyone remember the rest of the song?
