Not happy with SpeedPlay Frog Pedals...
« on: June 22, 2008, 02:24:06 PM »
The Speedplay Frog pedals that came on my new bike did not work out for me. They were OK on WTA trails but the dips and drops at Alafia took their toll on me with these. they are way too easy to come un-clipped after a dip that I am going back to the old SPD/Platform combo I had on my old bike. I will hold onto them in case I buy another bike just for XC type flat trails only.

Don't have personal experience with Frogs, but I heard it is fairly common to be accidentally unclipped especially on upstrokes.
IMO Speedplays are not friendly when you just started riding clipless. I would recommend switchings to spd.

My buddy Dan has the Frogs and has had no problems with them.  He's also been riding since the dawn of time.

I guess it's a love um or hate um thing. I looked on MTBR and they get mixed reviews with lots of peope having the same problem as me.

maybe next time I need pedals, but i already installed the platform/SPD combo pedals I had on my old bike that i liked. I'm just glad I didn't spend money on these.

I've heard a lot of people having problems with cracking the composite body from bouncing them off things.  I use the Shimano SPD set up.  Only gripes are when it gets muddy.

Cracking is a possibility with the Time's but they are pretty damn durable.  Time also makes an aluminum bodied pedal, the Alium's, and a platform like pedal, the Control's.  As far as durability is concerned, I'd take anything from Time over anything from Crank Brother's - I've seen way too many issues with Crank Brother's pedals to try them...even though they are really pretty.

I suppose it is possible to crack them, but you'd have to hit them pretty darn hard. I've been riding them for almost 3 years. Throw some new bushings in them every now and then, other than that they have been problem free.

Since you guy's love Time's so much, I just ordered a pair of the less expensive ones (aluminum) on sale from JensonUSA for $46. I sold the Frogs on Ebay for $60 so they paid to replace themselves and I got a new powerlink.  I am leaving on vacation friday and wont be able to put the new pedals on for a couple of weeks, but I look forward to it! Thanks for the recomendation.
