Conner Preserve in Pasco County
« on: June 26, 2008, 09:10:42 AM »
From today's St. Pete Times:

Recreation has place in Conner preserve plan

The Southwest Florida Water Management District this week approved a slate of recreational uses including hiking, bicycling, horseback riding and camping at Conner Preserve. Crews are marking the trails and adding other infrastructure at the preserve, located off State Road 52 just east of U.S. 41. They expect to have the amenities ready within the next few months. Swiftmud also envisions people using the preserve for nature watching and photography, geocaching and picnicking. The district acquired the 2,980-acre preserve five years ago to protect natural systems and water quality and to provide flood protection and opportunities for nature-friendly recreation.

any idea if the hiking/biking trails are going to be 'off road' or blacktop?

This would be so much closer for you and I!!!

I'm almost positive they will be dirt.  I've checked out the preserve from Google Earth there's already trails in there.  Plus the article says they will be putting up signs soon which means the trails are already laid out.

The only thing I don't know is if there's much elevation out there.

FWIW though, the county already has an R/C airplane field out there, so they may be willing to listen to the idea of a skills course or man-made obstacles out there if anyone is interested in pursuing that.

Dave - that would be awesome - I am going to check out google earth to see where they are...I might head up there and see if I can't 'steal' a ride up there to see what is going on...

if they are decent at all, that would give me a place to ride more often than heading down to the hole in the fence once a week!

Is there enough interest to pursue some trail work out there?  I guess people should ride it first and see what the potential is.

I would be up for it as well.

Dave - you must be a much better interpretor of google earth, b/c I couldn't see jack squat!  Looking at that, I wouldn't be able to tell where the trails were.

If you could give me an idea of where you were looking, I might be able to shoot up there this weekend sometime.

If you search for Ehren Cutoff Florida on Google maps, it will bring up the intersection of SR52 and Ehren Cutoff.  Just to the right of that intersection (east) is the preserve.  A friend of mine that lives on Ehren Cutoff said those little trails you see in the trees are what people use for walking and biking.  I'm not sure to what extent though, but I do know there are quite a few Geocaches in that preserve, so SOMEBODY is getting back in there.

Yeah - that intersaection is maybe 5 minutes from my front door. I drive by it all the time on the way to Croom and Santos.  Its pretty flat - like a flatwoods.  I might be willing help out with that if SWAMP were to become offically involved with the land managers since I am so close.
