New bearing time
« on: July 22, 2008, 11:16:27 AM »
I thought I just had a squeaky seatpost, but upon further investigation, my bearings and pivot hardware on my Blur need to be replaced.  They lasted me several years (about on par as the bushings on my old Truth) so I really can't complain.  I've got the rebuild kit along with Santa Cruz's bearing removal tool and bearing press on their way to me and should probably have them later this week or early next week so I can begin the overhaul.  I'll probably be an expert at it by the time I'm done and could probably help, or at least loan out the bearing tool, if anyone else needs to do this.

While maybe nobody else cared, I was embarassed to have my bike making such a commotion.  I'll clean and lube it up as best I can for this weekend and by next weekend it should all be rebuilt.

Sorry about that!  I'm going to try to quiet it down for the weekend or I may take the Intense out if it gets back from the shop soon - Mavic sent the wrong rims to the shop and my through-axle from Hadley had the wrong thread pitch, but on the positive side my leaking fork was just a loose bolt from the factory, my brakes are now drag free, and my rear hub is rebuilt minus the new axle.

I'll admit it was embarrasing! :D I kept thinking you were on a Specialized or something. :P

Per the UPS shipping notification I just received, I should be receiving the rebuild kit and associated tools this Friday so I should have it done prior to riding this weekend assuming I don't end up doing something catastrophic to the bike during the rebuild process.

I'll talk with Nick and see what his plans are.  I'm busy on Saturday so Sunday would be the day for me to ride this weekend.

I finally got around to starting the bearing replacement - so far I have removed the shock, removed the upper link, and then removed all the bearings associated with the upper link (4 in total).  It took me longer than I thought to get this far because it took me several tries to get the hang of the bearing removal tool.  I also degreased and thoroughly cleaned the upper link.  Next, I'll install the new upper link hardware and bearings and then get to work on the lower link and bearings (4 more bearings in total).

I have a torque wrench if you need it. Loco motion had a hell of a time replacing my bearings seized up good.

I think I have 2 more sessions (2 more hours in total) and then I'll be done.  Next session will be pressing in the upper link bearings and reattaching the link as well as removing the lower link, cleaning it, and pressing out the bearings.  After that it should be just a short session to press in the new bearings and reattach the link.  If I have the time, I'll try to do it all at once, but having that much free time while there is still light to work with is a challenge.

I thought about pictures, but I didn't want to get grease on my camera.
