No SS class in the upcoming "gone riding" races
« on: August 04, 2008, 03:49:15 PM »
I was doing my entry in a couple of the upcoming races on gone riding and they are not doing a SS division this year.

I emailed Dave about it and this is the reply

"Jonathon, we are not offering single speed categories in either this year, last year at Dauset there were only 5 that entered.

Thanks,

...not really matter if there is class for SS or not.

I am still riding my SS, either way I will still be slow.

Kind of dumb to do away with a class just because 5 people that entered, that's 5 more entry fees than they might get now that there isn't a SS class.

I don't see how it would cost any more to put on a race with a SS class? The only cost that would be involved would be adding a line to the fliers and signup sheet.

Just because they do away with the class, doesn't mean you can't race...though you'd be bringing a knife to a gun fight.  Despite what you might think, the additional class is more work for them that they are having a hard time justifying based on turnout.

You are probably right.

But the goal is to promote the sport....geared or one gear, rigid or full boinger, $400 or $4000 bike....just saying

Ok, but how much time/money/effort should they put in to cater to a group that isn't coming out and supporting them?  If you think it is as simple as making a change to a form (which costs money btw), you are sorely mistaken.

I don't know never really paid attention on how much time/money/effort it takes to add another category. Last years Alafia ss cat had a good turn out.

I don't know on the business side how involve it is compare to the gain in promoting the sport.

Maybe they have a matrix and you input probable numbers of applicants against the time/money/effort input and it will tell you "yes" or "no"

Just read into what RTR posted above and you can see that they are yet another race series that has decided the cost/benefit of a single-speed class just isn't warranted by the turnout (or lack thereof) of the SS'ers out there.

I don't disagree that would be 'nice' to have a single speed class but when the SS'ers don't come out in enough numbers to justify it, then it is really is in their best interests to drop the class.

If you really want a SS class so bad, have enough people come out to make the business case for them to add it.

We hosted the FL state SS championship race last year at alafia. Tons of people said they would be there. It was the hottest topic (and set records on a few forums). The smack talk flew and then on raceday about 35 people showed up. Big Lo$$.
I only ride a SS but the SS race topic still rubs me....

just because we won't get to stand on the podium (i wouldn't get to stand on podium unless they made a class that is SS clydes that are over 40 and names start with J class) doesn't mean we can't enter the races and have fun.  I mean most of the prizes are like a bunch of stuff that the LBS gives them as giveaways.  It isn't like we would be making any $$ off it.  I am just going to do my thing and have fun doing it.  Any glory that comes will be from within, knowing I did the best that I could do under whatever circumstances they are done under.  I am racing myself.

Bummer.  I was going to ride my Redline at one or two of the races this season.
