Survived my first deathwish!
« on: August 04, 2008, 07:40:27 PM »
Welp, rode Alafia this evening on my new wheel / tire setup and was pleased. The combo seemed to roll better than the original wheels/tires. Probably more the rims than anything. Anyway running Kenda Nevegal USTs on Mavic Crosstrails and although they arent the best setup that money can buy they worked very well. Rode North Creek, Bridges ( Cheryls loop also) Rollercoaster with all hard options and am still alive even after riding tubeless tires! ;D Trails were wet with some slick sections as always when it rains there. BTW the first hard option on Rollercoaster is sick - that drop will make you pucker.

Sounds like a sweet setup Endo, I had a set of CrossTrails with UST Explorers. They are a very Durable set of wheels. I have never tried the Nevegals but hear they grip like no other but give up a little in the rolling department. What are your impressions?

so far its hard to tell. Alafia was wet tonight so it seemed a little slower. On the dryer hard pack they seemed to roll good and fast- running at 35psi. They were slippery at first but later in the ride they started to hook up better, maybe they started getting worn in. They hadnt been ridden at all before this trip. I did notice the rim/tire combo was faster than my previous stock set that came with my 07 stumpy FSR comp. I finished North creek the fastest time yet, but not by a whole lot. I will know better when I can ride more.

I got the Crosslands, and even their budget minded options ride, noticeably better than most anything else, I have had on my bike..
I rode, Gatorback, and they had had a hard rain, and washed out a nasty rut in at the bottom, coupled with me being stupid, and not leaning far enough back, I G'd out in the rut fully compressing my 135mm fork, and crunching my full 230lb (at the time) body weight into the crosslands..I flew over the bars like a catapult, but the wheels remained true and solid..I have been sold on Mavics ever since.
When you ride so far out that you hear no traffic, no people...nothing..

zen.

yup- yesterday got squirrely on Cheryls loop downhill and ended up front wheel straight into the large tree on the left side. Thought for sure I had taco'd the front wheel on my first ride. Luckily no damage to wheel although Ive got a nice rash on my arms from Bear hugging the tree to stop myself from flying over the bars :o

Yeah, those Crosstrail rims are THICK!!! After you get a couple hundred miles on them I would let a good wheel man put a trueing/tensioning on the spokes and you should be good for a while :)

It was Rasterman somewhere towards the end of the epic tubeless thread :)

Glad to hear that you are liking the new tires - you may be able to go down to around 30 PSI for more traction and greater compliance.

yeah, but did you ride anything technical? Good thing you didn't, the tires peel right off the rims. ::)

LOL, I was referring to them being bad on real technical riding like Moab or Whistler.  Although plenty of people run them, just have heard too many bad things about them, and why risk it.  Just got back from Whistler 2 weeks ago, man, that was some crazy *!  I'll be posting some videos and pics eventually...
