Sanding brake rotors?
« on: August 06, 2008, 12:36:49 PM »
I know the rubbing alcohol trick to clean the rotors.  Has anybody lightly sanded their rotors to get the glazing off of them?

I've used some fine scotchbrite pads while running water over them, then followed up with a denatured alcohol wipe

I sand mine now before every ride. (see the thread below- avid juicy 5's?) You know the problems I've had with those brakes, but the sanding and rubbing alcohol trick has helped a bunch. They did make a little noise this weekend but it wasn't too bad.

I skuff my rotors now and then (especially after a Trout Creek mud-hole ride)  with 220 paper on a DA orbital. Do them on a flat surface. The sander will spin the rotor making a nice even random finish. Do the pads by hand. They re-bed after just a few stops.

If I had to sand my brakes before every ride, I'd find some different brakes! I mean seriously, every ride?

Yeah your right. It is kind of dumb that I do that. I'm due for a new bike soon. So I'm holding out till then. If I'm just going for a short ride I usually don't sand them.
