Single Speed Conversion
« on: September 15, 2008, 10:28:28 AM »
I was given a 1992 trek 1400 frame and I would like to build it as a single speed. What needs to be done to the frame to make this work? Does anyone know of any good websites on single speed conversion? I'm just looking for a good starting point.

The main issue for a frame with vertical dropout will be how the chain tightening can be achieved, either by a chain tensioner or an eccentric bottom bracket. IMO cheapest way to start with will be to buy a conversion kit similar to below. I did this on my Specilized Rockhopper and it worked fine just make sure the chain line is straight otherwise the chain will "jump".
I also reused the old rear derailleur as a chain tensioner but took it off coz it looks ugly.

There are two more options.  Have wheel built around an eccentric eno hub, or the way I did my first one, straight chain no tensioner.  If you set up your SS 32 X 15 on a 26, you measure the chain so its tight.  then lace up the rear cog, put the chain on the front ring, push it forward till it pops on.  No chain tensioner no eno.  Cheapest way to do it and I have done it on both 26 and 29ers.

My rockhopper is medium 26er and I was running 34x17 with no tensioner but you would need different sets of chain with each cog.
