Cool Sighting at WTA tonight!
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:26:19 PM »
I was riding over on Sinkhole with a couple of guys, and as we were about two turn back onto Grandpa. It strolled out on to the trail, stopped and looked at me. I motioned to the guys to stop, and as they stopped it took off. It couldn't have been more than 30 feet from us. I wish that I had my camera with me, although I wouldn't have gotten it out fast enough. It was BIG, probably not quite 3 feet at the shoulders, and 6-7 feet long......It ran a way fast, and hid.

Very cool! My first Panther sighting in 16 years in Florida other than at the zoo.

I have seen one at Boyette but not one in Flatwoods.  Maybe it was disfigured overgrown house kitten from that trailer park that has drank too much water out of those syncholes.  Who knows what kind of radiation waste is out there.   ;D :o  Sure wouldn't like to cross path with a hungry one though.

Apparently they can sprint to about 35 mph. I was feeling strong, but not that strong so I am glad that it turned and ran. It was really cool though!  :)

We did see some kid who looked like he lived in the trailers walking out of the woods....not sure what he was doing :-\ :-X

I've lived in and around Floridas wooded areas..for all 32 years, and have yet to see a Panther in person..I've heard them, and seen tracks..but never the cats themselves..

that rocks :D

And do we have a "hills have eyes" situation at Boyette? :p

As far as big cats go Florida Panthers are more apprehensive than most, and have never been a predator of people....So long as there is an overabundance of deer, wild hog and other easy targets, we are safe. :)
When you ride so far out that you hear no traffic, no people...nothing..

I saw one about 8 years ago on the side of I-75 just before Bruce b downs that was hit by a car so I know there are some around that area. It was a sad site and it was a good sized one.

Alan,

You shouldn't eat the mushrooms that you see growing off of the side of the trails! ;)

Thats just silly...Alan, you eat all the shrooms you want, and if Gregg don't like it, Lion-o will take care of it. ;)

You should probaly let someone know that works for the park that you saw a panther out there.  They may want to know, its rare that they are out that way but I guess anything is possible.

I saw a panther in the wild at my first tour de felasco.

Pretty sweet.
