Lance...back on the tour next year
« on: September 08, 2008, 03:15:42 PM »
Seven-time champion Lance Armstrong will come out of retirement and compete in next year's Tour de France, VeloNews reported Monday, citing sources close to the situation.

Armstrong, who will turn 37 on Sept. 18, will join the Astana team and compete in five road races, the sources told VeloNews.

He will compete in the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphine-Libere and the Tour de France. The sources told VeloNews that Armstrong will receive no salary or bonuses.

Armstrong's manager, Mark Higgins, would not comment.

Sources told VeloNews that Armstrong's comeback will be the focal point of a story in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, to be published later this month.

Why?  My guess is that he's having difficulty filling up his time now that he's a 'civilian' and not working towards winning another TdF.

I hope this doesn't turn out like Michael Jordan's comeback.

Thats strange. I just finished reading an article this morning about how busy he is now that he is retired. It talked about how his job as a cancer advocate sent him from town to town via private jet and he was considering a run at politics.

He may be 'busy' but that time spent may not be as fufilling to him as when he was training for another TdF.  He must be missing something in his life to come back.

When he did the Leadville 100, it probably lit that fire again.

There you go. It did seem strange that he kept saying that he didn't miss racing only to come back. But then again he is an ultra competive person.

I still believe there's going to be something behind the rumours

He probably heard that I was buying a road bike and got scared

It would be hard to question his commitment but so much of his success depends on the rest of his team.  Clearly, look at how Cadel Evans did this year against CSC.  While I think Lance could be in a position to compete, I would doubt he would have any better success than Evans with the same team arrangements.
