Best pedals for Mud
« on: September 09, 2008, 08:44:26 PM »
I recently took a nice spill at Boyette because I was unable to clip out due to mud being packed into my shoes and pedals. Does anyone have any suggestions for pedals that shed mud? I am currently using Welgo pedal with the pd style clip. I am considering the crank brothers egg beaters.

But once you throw reliability into the mix along with mud shedding, Time's can't be beat.

As long as you don't mind all the other problems that come with eggbeaters. A skinny twerp like you is probably OK on them though. ;D

Egg beaters are as the name implies, shaped like eggbeaters. With that being said, it is obvious why they would shed mud better than any other pedal. I use Shimano XTR's and love them but if I dab on a wet day at Alafia I am going to pack those puppies full :P At that point it is not a problem getting out but getting in :)

I was going to say that.  I never had a problem getting out of my pedals (shimano) when muddy, but I will be damned if I can get clipped back in.

FAIL

egg beaters have a round wires wear as the times have a flat blade like wire....this is the difference of removing mud off something with a round object of a knife...

also the cleats play an important role in how they work in the mud.  It is the   “open arch” engagement mechanism which is wiped clean by the cleat as you step into the ATAC pedal.

I have used both egg beater and times.  THe eggbeaters were nice and light but the times give you the adjustable tension on the pedal.  I've got a good knee and a bad knee and I must say that the times offer more adjustability to fit your body.  A slightly larger platform and more float is why I stayed with times.  Tough if any one is looking for some eggbeater SLs let me know I stil have them lying around.
