i know this is a bike forum, but folks usually have more than 1 hobby (although, with the price of some of your bikes, i dont see how, lol)

i was taking my exh man off and 2 studs broke in the head. i went to home depot, asked the guy for their baddest mambajamba drill bits, he gave me one. i took it home, got to drilling and its not even making a dent.
does anyone have any advice as to how i'm supposed to get these damn things out?

thanks SWAMP
Joe

Start with a tiny bit to make a pilot hole and progressively work up in sizes until the bolt is completely removed. You will probably need to insert a heli-coil or possibly retap the thread when you're done.

Try not to break the drill bit off in the hole. I've done that before, that sucks WAY worse than drilling an old bolt out.

i can't even make a dent, that is the problem. they are grade 8 bolts (from what i hear) they hold the manifold (1600+ degrees) to the head.

its impossible

Do what all the other DSM owners do and only use 6 out of 8 manifold bolts? Danger to manifold?

Find some quality drill bits. Home Depot basically sells junk. Their drill bits are the sh#!. Being old school that I am, that is not a compliment. Ace Hardware if you can't make it to a professional supplier.  Quality hardened steel is what you need to git'r'done. I have recently seen the misfortune of a contractor waste nearly $200 on Home Depot drill bits and still couldn't finish the job. Home Depot ran out of drill bits after 4 trips back to keep buying more and more, so the guy was forced to go to Ace Hardware. 1 drill bit from Ace finished the drilling  and probably would have done the whole job. It was hard not to gloat because I told him first thing, don't waste your money on Home Depot drill bits ( for drilling through steel ). Quality makes all the difference in the world. Thats the Truth.

For those of you who weren't aware, Ellsrider is talking about his bike. ;)

It has been a while since we had one of these clever references :D.

Use a little lube on that new quality bit to keep it cool or it to will soon be  sh%#  ;D Start small and work your way up to the size required for the EZ out to fit :)

If the studs are at least sticking up slightly above the manifold mounting surface you can (as a second option to drill and extract) super heat the stud with a torch until it is cherry red. Then allow it to cool and thus contract. I usually pour water on it to speed up the process but not sure I'd do that on an aluminium cylinder head. Sometimes your able to unscrew the broken studs/bolts by hand afterwards but other times I've had to use a small hammer and center punch to work it around counterclockwise. They also make left handed drill bits which will grab the stud and potentially thread it right out. If the studs were cross threaded that is a completely different story. You basically have to drill them out and hope to save the threads. Use "Blaster" nut and bolt loosening spray and allow it to leak down into the threads. Watch the torch arround it though!!
A machine shop can always weld a nut to the stud and then just unscrew it. That's actually what we do on difficult exhaust manifold studs where I work at. If the stud is sticking up quite a bit you can always slot it with a cut off wheel on a die grinder or drimmel tool and then use a flat blade screwdriver to back it out.
Worse case just take it to a machine shop and pay them 1/2 labor. Can't imagine it would take longer than that unless you've damaged them really bad trying to get them out yourself. Hope this helps. Since I've been there done that hundreds of times I can certainly feel your pain.

Is the head off the car? PB Blaster works pretty well, Aero-kroil works better if you can find that stuff. The cobalt bits from sears work pretty well, just remember to lube the bit to keep it cool. Like jdk said, don't break the bit, you won't get it out. If you are local to Lakeland I could probably help you out. Patience is the key.
