Feuling for Endurance events
« on: November 14, 2008, 12:59:58 PM »
Just wondering what everyone else is doing for fueling up before and during endurance events. Do you use liquid or solid food? Water or a sports drink? What do you eat the night before and the morning of?

I eat as much as possible the day before, use Hammer Perpetuem during the race (when i remember to drink, lol).  Water too, of course, and some clif bars.  Of course I've only done 2 solo races, but this strategy has kept me from bonking at both of them and feeling pretty strong for the whole race.

An important fuel I often forget is sleep.  Get a good amount of sleep before the race.  I can never seem to do that - always too excited/nervous/FACTORe sleeping in the same room.

This is purty good advice.

I dont eat the stuff or use the stuff that most people do I try to eat natural and whole foods.  SO, the day before I eat a good amount of proteins and foods high in good fats and lots of veggies for carbs.  The morning of I may eat some avocado and turkey sandwiches with whole wheat bread all organic of course and then during, I may eat sandwiches or nuts or ice coffee or things like that.

Im different.

Ultimately, Its going to take some time experimenting and finding out what works for you.  A good rule of thumb is 300 calories or so 2 hours before the start and then 2 to 300 calories and 1 entire water bottle per hour during.

hope this helps.

Chocolate cake. Before, during, and after. Wash it down with Dr. Pepper. Bring a tube of cookie dough on the trail for refueling on-the-fly. ;D

This is gonna hurt

I like to start my mornings off with a nice bowl of Super Colon Blow.

I usually increase my carbohydrate intake the week before the race.  From what I understand you want to avoid high fiber items like vegetables the day before and day of the race (more difficult to digest).  I have yet to find my optimal fueling needs...I'm having cramping issues which could be dehydration since I know I don't drink enough before and during the event.

FYI Tread29,
Did the Self Supported 115 mile version of the horrible hundred.
Night before I ate: 2 organic grilled chicken breast, one organic huge fillet of coho salmon.
sauteed zucchini and avocado.\

Morning off squash 3 eggs spinach and sour cream.

During, firt couple of hours, chocolate, then went to cashews and nut bars later in the day.

Beer and fried anything.  It should be noted I am working on a preride beer that will be just as good as a post ride beer.  I will keep you updated.
