Crank question
« on: November 17, 2008, 02:30:00 PM »
Coming from the BMX scene growing up, I understand the importance of a good crank....even on a cheap bike it makes the world of difference.

Whats a good relatively cost efficient crank..for say, $150 area...anything out there?

If you can step it up to $200 you can get a Shimano XT. A very nice crank for the price, pretty light at 850 grams and the external bearing cups hold up very well.

Keep an eye on Craigs List too Johnny.  You might just find a bargain in there.  You can always ask folks in here to look at what you find in there, and they can give you their thoughts if it's a good purchase or not.

Hmmm, good idea.  I guess I'll cruise through now, while I am doing nothing at work.  Thanks for the tip.

Mongoose has 2 flavors. Cheap---Buy at Walmart/Target/Sports Authority, or 2-3000 dollar high value for the money, but low brand image.

This looks like one that you would find at Sports Authority for around 300 dollars new. You would definitely get what you paid for in this case.

When I was a kid ( a long time ago) Mongoose was the $h@t!. That was before pacific bikes bought the name and started selling cheap bikes with the mongoose name on it.

Here are a few guidelines I'd go by. Look for a bike by one of the big manufacturers, Cannondale, Specialized, Giant, Trek are a few of the big ones that come to mind. There are others but usually are more expensive. You can find some decent hardtails for 3-400 bucks used that will last for awhile, but if you want a FS bike I'd start looking around the 8-900 ballpark. While occasionally you'll run into a great deal, most bikes under that range will not be very good. With that said it sometimes pays to investigate the cheaper ones as you never know what you'll find. Just don't be afraid to post up in here what you are looking at, you'll get some solid advice from most everyone. Hope that helps.

well when you are ready I have a nice Giant for sale. It might be a bit out of your price rage at the moment though.

Gregg - it was not that long ago that Mongoose used to be the ISH..but like you said, they sold out and now it makes me feel old seeing them in Walmart.

Cannondale, Specialized, Trek, and Giant aren't new names to me...but when I used to pay attention to them, they all made road bikes and didn't do much with MTB's...or maybe I just never paid attention to them enough.

I kind of like Giant and Specialized bikes from what I see...also see a few GT's that I fancy.

I got a 2007 Giant trance.  It has a bunch of upgrades and is a great trail bike. Again besure to try a few of them out to see what you are comfortable on.
