So, I made it.
« on: December 20, 2008, 09:52:48 AM »
Went to Alafia yesterday for my first time!  That place is amazing!  Took it slow and rode Sand Pine (where I had a nice meeting with one of the trees as I came out of the turn...my knuckles are a lil scraped up) to start then linked up to Rock Garden...at this point my map reading skills failed me, but got lucky enough to meet another rider who knew the trails a little better than me..So, I just trailed him for the rest of the day.  Which was a good thing because if it weren't for him I probably would have stayed on the easier trails.  We rode River Loop for a little.  We then went to Bridges, which was really fun, I fell the first time through, but couldn't accept that, so we looped around and hit it again and I cleaned everything except the huge climb into it.  After that we went over to Rollercoaster...which would be my last ride of the day, haha...The ride in made it seem like this was going to be a stroll in the park..took the first few drops like nothing, then I came to a monster...big drop down to a sharp left turn...boardered by water...yeah, I decided to walk that one, haha..the rest of the trail was mucho fun though, a lot of rhytm, I even cleared the drop into the climb with the hairpin turn, I was stoked!

That section you walked sounds like the first hard option.  That's the one that FactorE crashed on and did all of that damage I believe.  Have seen and heard of a few people go down on that spot.  Don't be ashamed to walk anything that you're unsure of.  Better to walk than break something on your body or bike.

Glad you liked Alafia.  Personally, it's my favorite.  Gotta get that avg speed up though.  ;)

That drop is where a tree jumped out in front of me and knocked me square in the head sending me backwards and my bike forwards!  Worth it though!

LOL Thanks for all those words of inspiration...I'll be sure to run all of those visions through my head on my next attempt at that drop :D

But seriously, I don't think I can ride flat ground anymore...I need drops now!!!

I am so thankful to one of the guys at my old LBS (Oliver's) for mentioning that I should "Graduate from Flatwoods".
Hit Alafia and was hooked. Still look forward to going there every week.
Next exciting step.....night riding.

Gotta agree Alafia is a GREAT place to ride, but take it slow, build your skills, Moonscape and Gatorback are trails that deserve much respect.

I agree, but will say that all trails deserve respect.  Bad things can happen on any trail, and even Sandpine.

Speaking of Sand Pine, I? ran right into that tree that pokes out over the trail.  Twice!  My knuckles are bruised and scraped!

That Sandpine is a treacherous trail - ask Sandpine.  ;D

I've shouldered many a tree in there and even got a perforated ear drum from a fallen tree at the edge of the trail.

I disagree with every word of your post....

Johnny,
did you meet "Marcel's Log" section?  you can't miss it, is the ONLY log of the trail that you have to hop over.  Back in the day was like 3ft tall tree though.   ;D
