Huge Alligator on Trail
« on: February 14, 2009, 12:38:59 AM »
Rode Alafia today - I was on the spur off of North Creek that goes out a little peninsula and comes back to the North Creek trail - almost at the end.  I got to the 180 turn in the middle and startled an 8-10 footer.  He was sitting right in the turn sunning himself/herself.  Luckily I was not carrying any speed - he was gone before I could get a pic.  Scared the crap out of me.

I rode Alafia on Thursday and ran into TWO big gators in exactly that same spot. Sunning themselves on the end of that finger of land. I jammed the brakes and hopped up onto the mound between the trail sections. They scrambled into the water before I could get to my Iphone to take a pic. Since there's a bit of a seawall effect on the point where they were sitting, I'm wondering if they're not walking along the trail from somewhere else to get out there. Definitely something to be looked into.

Once they ran away and the coast was clear (and I got my breath back) I couldn't help thinking of the joke that Bill Engvall tells at the end of the Redneck Comedy Tour that ends with "Bring me my brown pants!"  ;D

There's been quite a few sightings of gators on that spot.  Pretty good video on youtube that captures the gator sunning himself.

I think Art puts bait out on that section of trail to get the gators to hang out there.  It helps add difficulty to the trail.  :D

I have seen Alligators in that spot. Usually they run away quickly. Which if find very agreeable.
