First time to Alafia Saturday
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:05:50 PM »
Saturday will be my first time at Alafia. What are some good trails to hit. I can do most of the Vortex at Santos with little problem but some parts are difficult for me. I can do all the reds at Santos just not perfectly. I can also do all of Markham and Oleta with little problem.

The most difficult trails are Gatorback and Moonscape. Rollercoaster is a pretty good time as well but it's pretty easy. Make sure you also hit Bridges, Rabbit Ears, and if you have time North Creek.

Rock Garden (except for a few areas) River Loop and Sand Pine are the easy trails.

If you can ride the Vortex you should be good to go at Alafia, take it slow the first time thru Moonscape and Gatorback just to be safe. Do a warm up lap on North Creek, then head to bridges. After Bridges hit the first mile or so of Rock garden which has a couple of fun short finger trails. Next head to Roller coaster followed by Moonscape. Finally finish it with Gatorback. You would probably get bored pretty quick on Sandpine and Riverloop

You should really be fine on all the trails at Alafia, but you'll want to take it easy your first time through on Gatorback and Moonscape.  Gatorback has the biggest downhills, but they are generally smooth and have good run-outs.  Gatorback also has some of the biggest climbs - they are all doable, just takes some practice.  Moonscape has some more technical sections with rocks that can be tricky until you know where to put your wheels.

Start out on North Creek as it is a great warm-up.

They should have some available at the gate and there is a big one at the trailhead.
