No biking on the selmon roadies!
« on: February 23, 2009, 09:09:36 PM »
saw this link in the shoutbox (from mksandoz) and decided to post it, thought it was interesting

http://www2.tbo.com/content/2009/feb/23/231703/newest-bike-trail-may-be-elevated-crosstown/

my favorite excerpt was this..

Outfitting the upper deck with 54-inch barriers would cost $118,000 to $133,000, according to the authority. The expressway has permanent 32-inch barriers in place, but those aren't high enough to ensure cyclists' safety, authority officials said.

apparently a 32inch barrier is enough to stop a car going 70-90+mph, but not a biker at 20-30...

the article also said it would be closed monthly or quarterly on sunday mornings...
the article also mentions loss of 7-8k in toll revenue each time
also from reading the comments. the upper deck is closed during 'non rush hour' times.

so if the upper deck was closed anyway, how is that a loss of revenue?

I've never seen the upper deck closed, but leave it to Tampa/Hillsborough to do nothing to accommodate bicycles.
