'King (or Queen) of Alafia'
« on: March 25, 2009, 07:26:00 PM »
In one of the recent threads - either the Doom thread or the hardest trail sections thread - someone mentioned a skills competition which got me thinking...

Who would be interested in a King of Alafia competition?

The contest would involve:
  • a modest entry fee ($5 - $20) with the winner getting it all
  • Individual stages at various of the more technical spots on the trail (i.e. climb into Doom, climb onto No Dab Ridge, Mount Killanewbie, etc)
  • A scoring system along the lines of 10pts for clearing it in 1 try, 7 for clearing it on the  second try, 5 for the third, etc.
  • 5 (or so) rounds to determine the winner, if a tie we go into a sudden death OT on various sections
  • The list of potential sections will be posted before the competition, but the order and which ones will actually be in the competition won't be known until the day of the competition
Sound like a good idea?  If enough people like it, I'll do a more formal write-up and organize it.

Bill, Count me in!  Sounds like a good idea as long as KKRUNCH has to ride a hardtail 29er SS with no pedals!

It'll definitely be a 1 class, 'run what you brung' kind of thing...I'd love to see a mix of trail bikes, carbon fiber wonder-bikes, single speeds, 29r's etc.  If there is enough interest, I'll organize it.

I will probably do it, even though I am riding a bike that has easily 10-15 pounds on all of your bikes.
We continuously seek feedback from you as to how we can improve our policies and procedures since our primary goal is to act in partnership with you. If you have any questions or need to report any problems on the SWAMP forum, please send me a PM and I will get back with you ASAP.

I'll be there. Krunnch and Bikehard are going down. That's all I've got to say..........online. If I see that I'm gonna lose I'll just fake a shifting problem.

I should add that I will be the offical bike inspector. I only need two minutes alone with each bike. :D

Cool...lets see if we can get some more.  I'd love to see about 10 people that way the prize money is sizable.  I may also see if I can fabricate a crown out of old bike parts as a trophy.  It'll be like a skills day, but for money.

Catman might accidentally have a hole in his tire thus providing a nice taco to his rim when he drops into Doom... Wait.. let me get my pump out of my camelbak..wait i forgot it.. :P oh well better luck next time.

Should be lots of fun  ;D

Krunnch: Do you think you'd benefit from borrowing a more user friendly bike? Or would getting used to it out weigh the benefit? I have an XL Specialized Enduro  you could most likely use (if the owner doesn't actually come to he competition) but the frame is freaking huge. I think you told me you prefer a smaller sized medium frame. Other than that I only have my SS or Raleigh FR bike to loan to you and don't see all that much benefit in either of those.

I think talking trash before and after the skills show will be more than half the fun  ;)

We need to watch out for online tough guy Triple T, he will be hiding in the bushes with a stick ready for our spokes ;D and then ride out on his plastic bike winning it all!

I think the pot needs to be at least a $100 and there should be a bunch of challenges. You thinking a Saturday or Sunday Bill?

Recommended challenges:

1) Switchback to boardwalk on Gatorback
2) Initial climb into Doom
3) Paver climb on Gatorback
4) Last long climb on Gatorback (all the way up to the pine trees)
5) High side Doom drop around the tree
6) Franks corner
7) Climb on Shelly's loop

8 Root infested section of North Creek just after log crossing? Including log crossing?
9) Sketchy downhil to abrupt climb to immediate right turn and long climb on Gatorback.
10) Climb up to no dab ridge (left and right of the tree)
11) No dab ridge triple drop (better have a medic on staff)
12) Maybe the entire hard option at the end of Rock Garden? Log crossing section
13) Bridges left side of tree to paver climb
14) No pedal all the uphills on Bridges whoops
15) Rabbit ears

I included several easier sections for those who will not be trying the super deadly stuff. I imagine that we'll be limited to how many challenges we can do. May have to limit the amount of attempts per person.

Those were about what I was thinking for the competition.  I'd like about 10 options which would be posted in advance, of which, I'd choose 5 the day of the competition and have about 5 left over in case we need a sudden death playoff.

I'd do it on either saturday or sunday - whichever works best for the people that want to do it.  The pot would be entirely determined by the number of people who want to do it as 100% will be paid out to the winner, but I'd love it to be at least $100.
