Interesting Craigslist ad
« on: March 25, 2009, 08:37:17 PM »
I recently tried to upgrade my mountain bike for a full suspension bike at the urging of my boyfriend. I found a bike on ebay that was described well and looked good in pictures. I bid on it and won it. It was $108, which was within my price range, so I was excited. What came to my door, however, was a rusted out piece-of-garbage bike that doesn't go into all of its gears and is terribly uncomfortable for me to ride. There are no exchanges or returns on the bike, and I really have no recourse. The bike DOES operate, but it is not good for the trails that I like to do (intermediate and advanced trails at Carter Road and Alafia). The gears slip, can't get into first gear, etc. I replaced the brake lines, brakes, and tires, but the bike still isn't up to it.

I am out of money because of the above incident and cannot afford another bike. I am now seeking to rent or borrow a decent-quality mountain bike. I will maintain it and repair any damages that I incur. I would like at least front suspension. I do NOT want a Roadmaster, Mongoose, or Next bike because they BREAK doing anything other than cruising around town.

If you can help me please contact me via email. Thanks a ton.
If she didn't mention that boyfriend crap I'm sure she'd have tons of offers to fix her bike, loan her a bike, give her a bike, and to ride bikes with her. ;D

I got the impression that she was most likely an uninformed buyer or for some odd reason was expecting something great for $108. Some people are quick to call a bike a POS when it may only need a simple $15 derailleur adjustment or a $50 tune up. Which even our very expensive bikes need pretty often.

I can't tell you how many people I've run into who are just about fed up with their bike and it was a fairly simple fix when they finally took it to the LBS or my garage  ::) . Hell, I recently got  my brother in laws bike up and running in about an hour and it was sitting outside behind his shed for like 3-5 years!

well, most folks that can ride the trails she described would know something about bikes. she said it looked good in the ad, but was a "rusted POS" when she got it. i'm thinking someone got bamboozled

Sounds like she might have been bamboozled by her boyfriend also.  Might be time for her to upgrade that too

If $108 blew her budget, how does she propose she's going to pay for a rental? and If she is unfortunate and does happen to break something, how would she afford to fix the rental/loaner bike? If she detonates the derailleur for instance, and it was a $50 derailleur it's not unlikely to be over $100 once you throw in labor...thats out of her budget, by her own admission.

This sounds like someone looking for a sucker.

I think I'll hold on to my bike, and wish her luck. :D
When you ride so far out that you hear no traffic, no people...nothing..
