gots me a new camera
« on: March 29, 2009, 11:16:02 PM »
so we were at sams today and I ended up buying a helmet camera on sale for like $60. It's an oregon scientific ATC2k. I need to mess around with it some more to get a better picture. I tried mounting it on my helmet but that didn't workout so well so I put it on my bars, next I'll frame mount it so it doesn't have so much side to side shaking. just made a quick test video incase anyone wanted to see how it worked.

yep they were on sale for like $57.97 or something, the camera doesn't come with software because its plug and play. just plug it in and the computer recognized it as a mass storage device, just copy the files onto your computer and your done.
as far as editing goes if you have windows xp or later then you have a program called windows movie maker. Thats what I used to cut down the video and do the fade outs, its very easy to use once you get used to it.

Make sure you don't edit out any of your crashes.  :)   We like to watch those.

That's one of the cams I was considering when I bought mine. I have the GoPro Wide. The thing that attracted me about yours was it's a bullet cam but I liked some of the other features of the GoPro. In researching all of my options, it was pretty clear you either go with something like the lower-end cams or you'd have to spend several hundred bucks for something like the POV. Good stuff though, and it does what we ask of it... just record our rides for casual videos and to make fun of each other!  ;D

I wasn't really planning on buying it but for $58 I couldn't pass it up. here is another video I shot of my pup at the park just to give you all an idea of the video quality.

I have this same cam, got it for Christmas from my wife. Works great for the buck, dropped it in the pool and works like a champ :P

ok after trying to get it to work well for a week I've decided to return it. the problems are first the mounting system sucks so I got some foam and hose clamps to solve that somewhat. second as you can see in the videos the action slows down anytime the camera isn't still, if you read the box it says 30 frames per second, but if you read the fine print is says it may adjust frame rate and picture quality to maximize memory or something. anyway I bought a HD dv cam from walmart for $99 and I'm gonna rig up a mount like I did for this one. I'll post up once I get it all together.

This is the last video I shot with the ATC2k, and this is the best quality I can get out of it which is why I'm returning it.

So were you completely unable to get the helmet mount issue worked out?

I tried it a few ways and it always jiggled, plus it weighs more then the helmet so mounting it on the side is really annoying, if I mounted it on top it was ok, but since I'm 6'3'' it hit every low branch I tried to dodge. plus you had to keep your neck locked foward at all times cause if you turned just a little it slowed the frame rate down.
I'm gonna try to rig up the new hd cam I have and we will see how it works tomorrow.
