Got the DH bug
« on: April 13, 2009, 04:31:56 PM »
Ever since I pushed my bike up 3 miles for 5 miles of sweet DH runs in AZ, I have been hankering for more. I will be heading back out that for 2 weeks on 27 April.  Does any one know if any of the ski resorts will have trails open before May 13??

Mammoth and Northstar won't be open until June.

You can check out Angel Fire which is in New Mexico (I believe) and you can always head to Vegas to hit Bootleg Canyon.  They run shuttles on the weekends for around $20.  From looking at the Angel Fire website, it looks like they'll be open in May - http://www.angelfireresort.com/summer/activities-biking.php

looks like they are all opening the week after I leave.  Crap!!  Oh well time to look for east coast destinations.  Maybe I will have to plan a trip to snowshoe.

Did you think about hitting Bootleg Canyon?  It is right there in Vegas, open year round, and has an incredible variety of trails - full on DH gnar, desert xc, dirt jumps, etc and they run shuttles during the weekend - http://www.bootlegcanyon.org/

If you are in southern AZ have you checked Tucson. They have a couple of ski runs on whatever that mountain is open most of the year. Mount Lemon????

Yep, Mount Lemon. I believe the ski resort is called Summerhaven. I lived in Tucson for a few years and I heard that people biked up there in the warm weather. If you choose to go there, you won't be unimpressed with the trails south of Tucson either.

I just spent a few months about an hour south of tucson.  While there I asked a few of the locals about Mt lemon and apparently there was a fire there recently which pretty much destroyed most of the trails.  Now the Big DH park is further north on White mountain.  Though I did get to sample carr canyon, miller canyon, ramsey canyon, as well as star mountain, and fantasy island.  All very nice spots to ride.  I just wish there were more shuttles running.

It's a drive from the South but Flagstaff has some great MTB runs much of the year. The snow comes late and little up there most years.

South Mountain... I'd rather earn my descents but people do shuttle.

Up Mormon > National to the antennas > turn around and bomb down National... the bigger the bike the faster you'll go.

You can also test your cojones bombing down Geronimo...

Oh, and DH is the coolest thing EVER!!!  To bad we are lacking in the essentials to make mountains - millions of years and fault lines - DAMN!!!!

Bootleg is fun.  It really has anything that you would want to ride right in a nice compact area and being close to Vegas makes it easy to get to.  The only downsides are is that it is impossibly hot there during the summer (with zero tree cover) and if you decide to do the DH trails, wear your armor as the rocks there are razor-sharp.
