Everyones got opinions but................
« on: May 26, 2009, 03:21:32 PM »
I need a new chain and cassette. I dont know if an upgrade from the SRAM 971 chain is worth the cost and if a PG990 cassette is worth it. Or just save the money and go with the direct replacement. FWIW I havent ever broken the chain or had any probs - just getting worn. What are you gusy using?
wherever you go.....there you are.
Just a big Hooper!

I'm a fan of SRAM stuff, but I've heard/read that the 990 cassettes aren't the most durable and the pins that attach the bigger rings to the cassette spider are a little thin and prone to breaking...which is a shame because that cassette is really pretty.  I typically use middle of the road SRAM (970/980) or Shimano stuff depending on what's on sale.

I've had a PG990 fail on me and cut a ride short.  Sucked.
Never had a problem with the XT I replaced it with, nor the one that I have on my current bike.

I've been using the PG990 for the past few years and never had a problem. i use it with an XTR Chain combo. I also clean the hell out of the drivetrain after every offroad ride. Previous Cassettes were XT always XTR Chains.

I'm using a SRAM hollow pin PC991 chain and a PG990 cassette both of which have many many miles of hard use on them and neither has shown signs of issues. Whether or not they're worth it over the 970/980 stuff is a matter of opinion though.

I agree with TTT on the suspect nature of the 990, seen a FEW fail. For the same price get an XT. Upper tier chains are pretty typical, can't go wrong with a 991 or 7701 Durace. The Sram power link works equally well on either brand. At the end of the day your only talking a few dollars difference between XT/990 and their cheaper siblings, same with chains so it I would look for the best deal :)

I've always prefered Shimano for my chains and cassettes.

^That's hot, might have to give one of those a try if my PG990 ever gives up.

XTR chain and XT cassette (almost 5 yrs old but didn't get a lot of use until the last few). I've ridden the XTR chain way past it's intened life and it still didn't give me any issues. Except for when I didn't follow the instuctions on how which direction to link it together  :-[

I've seen a few Sram chains break at the quick link so I have stayed away from them unless they came on the bike. That quick link sure is nice but I imagine there is at least a little trade off.
