I run Bontrager Mustang 29'r and they are holding up good to whatever Alafia and Boyette have to offer.

The Shimano XT 29er wheels are supposed to be pretty good.  They sell between $500-700.

Check hear:  http://bike29.com/catalog/handbuilt-bike29-custom-29er-wheelset-p-368.html
and   http://www.universalcycles.com/shopping/index.php?category=899
You can find custom builders that can build a set for you.  You don't have to have King, Hadley, or I9s to have a very good set of wheels.  Don't get me wrong.  If you can afford them, they are SWEET!  Good luck.
