Bike Shipping
« on: June 14, 2009, 10:39:44 AM »
Hey -- Shipping a mtb bike in a hard shell case. Should I pop of the derailleur or leave it on a and protect it well? Seems like there are two schools of though on that one. Thanks for any advice.

I leave mine on, but I use an old shoe string to tie it up towards the chainstay.

Shippers can be rough. Things can get dropped or stacked on top of the box.  It's an easy off/on so I would say be safe and unscrew it and attach it with zip ties or wrap an old t-shirt to keep it from bopping about.

With a hard shell case like the one from Trico, they pretty much have to run a fork lift through it to damage anything.  I just tie mine up close the frame and pack all my biking clothes around it.

I have had two derailleur hangers bent in shipping but that is in a cardboard bike box.
