Why did I get my son into mountain biking?
« on: June 19, 2009, 09:38:10 PM »
I finally had to buy my son a 26" MTB After putting off the inevitable for as long as I could.  So I had to fore go a few upgrades on my bike so he could become the proud owner of a 2010 Giant Boulder SE.

looks like a 24inch. for all those other doting dads,I have a 24inch spesialized hotrock FSR full suspension kids bike that my son says is plush for sale with barends and XT rear deraileur. Having said that me and my son have bonded well since we started mountainbiking and I recommend it to any dad whos kids stay glued to thier video games

It is a 12.5" frame with 26" wheels.  Your son wants a Camelback?  Wait until he wants the clipless pedals, shoes, and the jerseys.  He is already hitting me up for Disk brakes!  I told him no disk brakes until he starts doing ALL the trails at Alafia, plus he owes SWAMP 20 hrs of trail work.  I also have a 5 year old just getting started.

He likes to ride Boyette and Alafia only the intermediate trails.  Now that he is on the 26, that will be changing.

My sons frame is 14 inch. smallest i could find for the $$. I am taking him out Sunday. I have a feeling the green trails wont be for long.
He wants to ride Spider berm since he helped build it last Saturday. I need to teach him how to go down hills!

Find a big retention pond, somewhere it is pretty open and safe. Then you can watch him go down the hills, and have him watch you go down to show what he may/may not be doing correct.

Giant XTC Compostite = 1800 retail
race wheels = 750 retail
Dad forced to work at bike shop to support the habit = priceless
Lots of extra time spent together = even more priceless
Downside = he now knows what all the good stuff is and learned "how important" upgrading is.

Your boys have it made man. Nothing better than seeing a 5yr old riding stuff that scares some grown men!
