a pain in the ass!

Speaking of brakes and pains in the ass...did you get your front caliper issue straightened out?

To keep the thread on topic, go hydro.

They are first generation proedge.

TripleT, took everything apart, cleaned it,had trouble pushing the piston back in but it finally pushed back. Haven't had a problem sense but also haven't had it on the trails yet. Just driveway test.

would you like to go next gen? i have a brand new set im about to list for $200.

Good price and I appreciate the offer but I'm stuck on trigger shifters now after not being able to fully get used to combo style.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a Giant Rincon that came stock with discs F&R. I'm used to having Shimano V-Brakes on the rear only. For some reason I think the disc front brake works well, but the rear is not as responsive as you would think (tire does not lock up).  Seem like the rear is undersized or something. I'm not thrilled about my rear disc. Is this normal? Or do factory disc brakes stink?

what brand and model are the brakes? I would guess they are Mechanical and not hydro. they just may need to be adjusted. it can also depend on what kind of riding you are doing.

Mechanical (cable) Discs F&R.  I've got them adjusted to a T. Do they make a high performance brake pad? Not sure about the brand... just learning all the MTB lingo and brands/models.  They're "stock" lol. but back to the original poster... I'm not sure I see the advantage of discs vs V-brakes to be honest. Maybe in the rain, mud and such you'll see a huge difference?

Something ain't right if you can't tell a difference, check your pads for contamination as they should lock up like Lindsey Lohan on a bottle of J.D.

yeah, I was going to say sounds like chain lube got on the disc and pads...
clean the disc with rubbing alcochol and take the pads out and clean then as well.

BB7s are the way to go, if you are looking to make the switch economically. They are bullet proof too.

Yeah, this was a bike shop bike... so I'm not sure how they threw it together. Good chance lube got on the pads. Will clean all the components with brake parts cleaner and use some sand paper on the pads too. Try and resurface them.
