YMCA/CARDIO TRAINING
« on: July 19, 2009, 05:47:16 PM »
I finally joined the Y and found out they offer a cycling class that includes interval training and strength training. I rode 12 miles today on the stationary bike and ran another 4 on the tread mill. I feel pretty good and plan on doing the cycling classes at 5 am to help improve my cardio

you will get more cardio out of a good spin class than the same time spent on a bike 90% of the time - that is a good workout

yeah - figure no wind resistance and a smooth flat road with no incline or nasty roots to steal your MO...  you can do intervals on a stationary bike too...  just increase cadence and/or resistance for 1-2 minutes in the beginning with 1-2 minutes of rest between each interval.  Do 5 then rest for 5-10 minutes and repeat.

This is good for those starting out.

Tommy, I belong to the new Tampa Y and occasionally do the spin classes. They will definitely help you out.

i did my first class last night at the new tampa y and it was great, it really tests you. i couldnt get the hang of standing up and pedaling on a stationary though it seemed like i was about to launch off the bike.

you will learn to smooth out your pedal stroke doing that - the high cadence and stand up drills in spin classes will let you know when you are not spinning correctly - you have to put pressure on the pedal all the way around - not just push - push - push like most people do - if you want to know if you have any weakness in your pedal stroke, take one foot off and pedal for five minutes with one foot.  You will see where you are weakest.

Fe it seemed like i was having to hold myself up with the bars to stand and pedal so when everyone else stood up i just added more resistance and picked up my cadence trying to compensate for it
