i was on the toe clips. i'm planning on getting the whole clipless pedal/shoe setup soon

that would help a lot - I forgot my bike shoes once and tried those cage things and i never felt comfortable standing up

I have tried many shoes over the years. For my cross country style nothing has lasted longer or held up better than shimano. I have tried specialized, nike and cannondale. SIDI is supposed to be good as well but I have not tried them..
"Dad, these pedals are terrifying!"

For your spin class you will probably have to go SPD type due to pedals on the trainers, Shimano make a very durable pedal that gives a very positive in and out with their only knock being they don't shed mud as well as an eggbeater/crank bros or Time pedal. Each style has it's own cult following :)

I planned on starting spin class there at their 5:15am class.  Glad I didn't start last week, as they have had an outbreak of "Swine Flu" there and have closed ALL youth departments today for a thorough cleaning.  I will be avoiding that place for a little while.
