SWAMP time trials?
« on: July 25, 2009, 09:52:38 PM »
From time to time people post up threads asking how long it takes to complete a trail (there is presently one regarding North Creek in the Alafia trail forum).  Usually it turns into some bench racing and a lot of smack talk.

Not sure if this has ever been brought up before, but what would you guys think about setting up a section on the site where people list their fastest times for all the popular trails?  I think it would be interesting to create some friendly competition.  It would also give many of us slower folk a goal to shoot for.

And...I'm curious if this could be taken one step further.  During my ride at Wilderness Park today I thought it would be cool to have a permanent time trials course setup for anyone to complete on their own time.  We could mark it with specific markers and people could post up their times on the site.  The course would be made up of the trails open 365 days so that this could be a year round contest.  No prizes or anything.  Just the honor system that your time is accurate and that you didn't cut the course...and of course you get bragging rights.

There is a racing section already.
This would be cool, but honesty rules with times has to be adhered to.
Suggestions:
1) If someone posts times that are disputed by the majority then they have to prove their time with reliable witness's to keep it real and no BS.
2) If your busted cheating then you don't get to participate.
3) Beginner, Intermediate, Raced 3 or more times.
Makes it fun and competitive.

Something to consider...talk with the maintenance guys (or whoever you feel is appropriate) at each to trails to see if they have any issues with you putting blazes on the trees to mark the beginning and end to the various courses.  This way there is no confusion as to when you should start and stop your timing.  Also consider keeping a listing of all times (or maybe the top 10) by section in a thread on the board so people can follow it, track times, measure progress, etc.

Next chance I get I'll put some measured markers down on a few choice trails at Boyette and post up.  Parks Dept. frowns on spray paint unless they are the ones doing it.

Cool...I was just thinking that some kind of marker to denote the beginning and end of a trail section will help ensure everyone is comparing apples to apples.

I had mentioned previously that we could do something like this:

In Alafia section, have a "sticky" thread - "Official North Creek Times" thread, "Official Rollercoaster Times" thread

In the Boyette section, same idea, as well as the other trails.  But have them be seperate so that they are clean and easily read through.  Having one massive thread with multiple trails will be confusing and be difficult to keep track of once the thing gets going...

just my $.02
