well theres a video showing the XTR deraileur  moving around more than a XO. I heard someone saying that less movement reduces chain slap on chain stay. I dont see how as the chain tension in that area had nothing to do with moving deraileur, but im sure someone knows more than me about that.
Scram had more brake systems to chose from. I heard the new XX cassette takes 9 hours to cnc. I wonder how much that would cost as the start up cost to buy the machines to keep up with demand.1 machine can only make 2.6 per day. I havent used the newer sram shifters, and have often wondered what the difference would be. Sram has shinier chains, but I think all in all shimano is more expensive and have to give sram thier due by starting with grip shift and by aquisition have brought a crank maker, rock shox, sack, avid to the table to give shimano a run for thier money

SRAM = loud, crisp, confident shifting (no ghost shifting), 1.1 actuation...

Shimano = quiet, smooth shifting (possible ghost shifting due to lack of tension and fine adjustments necessary), 2.1 actuation...

I personally have used XTR RDs, LX RDs, SRAM X9 and X7 RDs. I have also used all three types of cages and prefer the Short above them all. I would take SRAM ten fold over Shimano based on the crisp shifting and ease of wrenching.

I've had bikes with XTR, and ones with XO. They both work well, and the point about the SRAM having less chain slap is true. When you are pedaling it doesn't matter, but when you are coasting over rough stuff it makes a difference. Is it a huge deal, not really. IME the SRAM stuff seems to be less sensitive to sticking in the shifter cables also, the cables have to get really bad before the shifting starts to mess up. I prefer SRAM, but like I said earlier they both work.

coke

neither

dark

I prefer the cleaner cable routing on the SRAM read der. SRAM's middle price point items also seem much more solidly built when compared to  Shimano's of similar price/spec.

One thing I have noticed was how smooth my 2001 xtr shifters were compared to my 2009 xt shifters. The newer xt are crisper and louder and the spring in either the shifter or rr deraileur seem stronger. I wonder if rear hub ( rachet system)has any part in the chain slap delima.because the casette has to spin for the slap to be possible and then the spring in deraileur comes into play to try to stop it correct?

I was making the same observation to some of the guys on Sunday. I rode my old bike with it's 2006 XTR and had forgotten how really smooth it was. I have new XT rear and had XTR rear (before a big stick put an end to that expensive dream) They shift very similarly to each other, and frankly they have been made to feel more like the current sram.....Shimano is my choice.

Truthfully, there isn't a significant difference in quality at the same pricepoints.
