Oh! The Carnage...or How was your ride today?
« on: August 16, 2009, 05:15:29 PM »
Exploded my rear derailleur and bent my hanger/dropout today :(

I was riding with TTT on our first trail of the day, North Creek, when it happened.  About a mile in, there is a flat section that is bit elevated that goes into a downhill to the right.  I usually like to jump into the downhill park, rotating the bike in the air towards the direction the trail turns...never had an issue with this before.  This time, when I landed I heard a loud 'clunk' followed by a 'clank-clank-clank'.  Pulled over to discover this...

To make matters worse, as I sat crying on the side of trail lamenting the untimely passing of my derailleur.  TTT, being the bully he is, said 'I'll give you something to cry about' as he started jumping up and down on my derailleur hanger resulting in this...

What a depressing day...at least if this stuff is going to happen, it should happen at the end of a ride and not the beginning.

That's what you get for sitting on the side of the trail crying like a girl!  >:(

Definitely sucks that it happened so early in the ride.  I don't even think I had broken a sweat yet.

I'll give it a 7.2/10. I ripped mine out of its housing and bent a dh hanger, but good work! Looks like you weren't riding the big bike - Santa Cruz Blur?

P.S. - Stop bein' a tard and get a shorter cage derailleur!

I was under the impression that for a FS bike and running a triple up front, you needed a long cage in the back?  I'd rather run a medium cage if possible.

Ask Proedge, I think he said his new bikes came with a medium cage, 3 ring front?

You are correct. Our bikes Came with 44t, 34 rear, Med Cage X9's, Med Cage X0. I've but 4 09' Epics together and 1 09' Era, all have this setup.

I use to run a Long Cage XTR but then Slapped a Short Cage instead.. just in case if i need to walk over any rock gardens.

Thats good to know, the only reason to run the long cage is to have sufficient chain take up to be able to hit all possible gear combo's, if the medium cage gets that done I would go that route next derailer swap :)
