Chain repair tool?
« on: August 19, 2009, 07:26:07 AM »
Riding Boyette Saturday when a friend (also a new rider) had his chain break at Mt. Boyette. Some great folks that we came across helped him get it fixed as none of us had the tool or equipment. Which really made me think - I need THAT tool and a link for when ever my chain decides to let go.

My question is what is THAT tool and what do I need to be able to get out of that situation? Your help is greatly appreciated. I was looking at pricepoint.com at all theit tools, but not sure what I should get.

Thank -

Dan

When you buy a multi tool make sure it includes a chain breaker. Unless you have a singlespeed, an extra link is not really necessary in my opinion...an extra pin or two should get you back on the trail.

I have a Topeak Alien2 multi tool.  It is big but has any tool you could need for trailside repair plus space for a couple pins.

All you need is a chain break tool and a SRAM goldlink. See pictures below:

Personally I would pass right over the sram powerlink and get one made by wipperman.  The sram ones are sometimes impossible to get off causing lots of foul language and drinking.

Forget the pins, get a powerlink either a Sram, KMC or Wipperman. I have had no issues with the Sram powerink, you just have to squeeze the opposing ends and push and Viola! Powerlinks are chain specific so identify if you have a 9 speed or a 7 or 8 speed. The 7 and 8 speed link is wider than the 9 speed and will not work on a 9 speed chain.

Wonder who that was on the trail....  ;D I am ordering one too along with some extra chain, cause in the end that's what had him walking back to the truck, a twisted chain.

I think I'm gonna pick one up tonight so as to not go "without protection" Saturday and Sunday.

Had my chain break last night at Wilderness park right at the powerlines by piglet/techno pig. Gregg was nice enough to fix my chain and I had a chain tool and a powerlink. he had it fixed in a matter of minutes and the hardest part was running the chain back the right way through the derailuers...
