In Naples for 2 weeks...trails? riding partners?
« on: September 14, 2009, 01:11:53 PM »
Hi there.  I'm in Naples for a couple weeks visiting my parents.  I have been in Asheville, NC for 10 years and mountain bike at least a few times a week.  I'd love to find a couple trails and some people to ride with in the Naples / Ft. Myers area.

Anybody out there?

thanks,
SM

when i stayed in naples a few months back i hit the CALOOSAHATCHEE REGIONAL PARK Trails about 30mins north off i75. it's a pretty nice loop if you hit all the options.

If you have the time, you can hop across Aligator Alley and hit Markham Park.

I rode these trails during Xterra Caloosahatchee. I have two suggestions: don't go during the middle of the day, and try to avoid riding immediately after it rains. That clay/mud mix was like greased ice.

Yeah, I'm not sure we're in the "open season" for Caloosahatchee (CRP) again yet, especially with all the rain we've been getting.  That place pretty much gets written off for the wet season.  I'm not sure that it CLOSES closes, but conditions and maintenance are both pretty much a no-show from all I've heard.  Seems like more of a "snowbird" trail, open from October to April.  Check out the local club's site at http://www.mudcutters.org/

North Port Trails (http://northportmtb.org/) are similarly weather-affected as everything here in the area, but might be worth checking out if you like a rock-em sock-em technical challenge.  Aside from that it's a schlep, down to the other coast or up to the stuff in the Tampa area.  You may be able to work out a car-pool with others from that area for either direction.

good luck!

I live in the area.  its not worth going to the caloosahatchee trail right now (unless you like mud riding), you'd be better off with a swamp buggy.  The North Port trail will be damp but not flooded.  unless you're into wooden structures I wouldnt go there as the trail is basicaly linear and Naples is really close to markham park and the trails there are much better.  If you got a road bike bring that instead.

Theres also the trek bicycle store of naples, and they've got a tech that spends quite a bit of time on a mountain bike. hes a young guy, like 20, and always wears an apron, pay him a visit.
