Alafia Double Blacks
« on: October 05, 2009, 10:48:33 AM »
I have been actively mtb'ing since 1990 and have helped build many trails and stunts in FL over the years.  One thing that continues to sadden me is the continuous effort on the part of SWAMP to make every trail, even if it is a "double black" into a generic, smooth, sidewalk, designed for one bike type "xc".  I rode Moonscape yesterday and noticed that the climbs were all loaded with baby-heads and all the dh's were all smoothed out?????  The first big dh was so loaded with dirt that the berm was completely wasted and could not be entered from the bottom.  It was because of this stupid trail change, that I blew the corner and dislocated my shoulder.  STOP TOUCHING THE DOUBLE BLACKS!!!!!  They are much better without your help...  Stop making the Double blacks into blue squares...  Leave something that is actually hazardous and difficult both up and down hill....  You and your short travel bikes have miles upon miles of "xc" trails to play on.  Leave Gatorback and Moonscape alone as you are clearly incapable of supporting them in any useful way.  Leave some diversity, the world of single track is not just for one type of rider.  Just because you can't ride it or it scares you, doesn't mean that you should make it easier, it just means you should ride something else!

So from what I'm gathering, you actually want trails like Gatorback and Moonscape to be shut down permanently by park management due to them not being maintained and up to the standards they expect?  This is a state park, not some private piece of land that people can do whatever on.  Much of the maintenance done is just to keep the trails sustainable - i.e. fall line trails need to be armored or they disappear with rain and brake dragging.  Not to sound like a broken record, or what I'm sure you'll hear later, go out to the maintenance days if you want anyone to take you serious...all this whining is like people that complain about government yet aren't even registered to vote/go vote.

Have fun with your wonderful first post!

Pha3drs,
I have little energy to reply to your post properly but I am sure others will.  Heal fast and I hope you come out to help us soon.  We need more EXPERT riders to come out to help whenver they can to maintain or create more EXPERT trails for you to ride.  I would also like to include what you typed in on the SB earlier:

[Today at 11:06:24 AM] pha3drs: what is allowed?  Why did that sweet jump get blocked on the end of gator back?
[Today at 11:06:45 AM] pha3drs: who thought it was ok to chop down a live oak tree to block a sweet jump?
[Today at 11:06:59 AM] SandPine: wow.. so you the one that build that jump on gatorback?
[Today at 11:07:08 AM] pha3drs: no
[Today at 11:07:19 AM] pha3drs: but I liked it

Oh yeah, that sure was a sweet jump  ::)   Roll in, unseen, into another trail to a sweet, no lip, roller to flat landing...very sweet stuff indeed.

funny the ones that complain are the ones that are never out to help and to know why certain changes were made in the first place.

on a side note if the double black trail was made into a blue square and you are such a highly skilled rider how did you crash??

I love people who bitch about the trails... I may bitch about a lot of things, but bitch about trails that others build on public land that we are allowed to ride I would never do. Want something harder? build your own damn trail on your own land.. I am getting sick of some of the load mouth trail critics around here lately....

a simple question - is it not OK to make a suggestion or have an opinion about something that you didn't help with?  Not just in MTBing but in real life as well.  I always here people complaining about the conditions of roads - they pay taxes but don't go out and volunteer to help fix those roads.  They complain about gas prices but do they go help out trucking the gas around for free or something....my point is...people come here time and again and make a suggestion and what they have to say whether valid or not always gets a rude slap in the face because they don't help wit the trails...how is this any different than every day life?

I think costructive input is welcome. I think sometimes people come accross as whining and complaining. Perhaps it is because we are typing and not talking. There is no inflection so I can only read what words were typed. This post sounded like a whine. Maybe I'm wrong........
