If you could only have one...........
« on: November 21, 2009, 07:46:53 PM »
I'm sure you  longtimer SWAMPers here have hashed this out a million times.  Bear with me as I am new to your forum.  Not new to the bike by a long stretch but concentrate most of my cycling forum time on a couple of roadie sites.

So, back to the MTB and consider that my question refers to a riding area between Gainseville and here.  Felasco, Santos, WTA, Boyette, Alafia and such.  If you had to concentrate all your dollars into one MTB what platform would you ride.  Not asking about brand as that always opens it up to too many loyalties.  I mean HT vs FS, 26 vs 29 and so on.

Let me divulge that my current MTB is a GF Rig that I have upgraded quite a bit and I love it.  My past bikes have been several GF's (HT and FS), Serotta ti 29r HT and Ellsworth Truth.  I have had a hard time in the past holding on to bikes very long but as the economy has put the squeeze on me (I am a contractor) I have learned to hold on a little tighter.  That being said I am selling one of my road bikes (contradicting myself, huh?) as I have found in the past few years that I really love my fixed gear roadie more than the others.  The plan is to take the $ from the sale, put it with a few other $'s and do up a new MTB ride.

Whaddaya think?

Riggleys, whats gum got to do with anything? If I could only have one MTB for Florida trails it would be a 4" travel XC machine. Anymore travel is overkill and detracts from the bikes ability to Climb, rail and pedal efficiently on those LONG epics :)

If 26er's are your thing, then a 5" travel FS (think Trance X).  If 29er's are your bag, then a 4-5" FS (think Niner RIP9).

Dude, you got it bad.  I am a loooooong time roadie and I can smell you a mile away.  If you want a real challenge getcha a fixed gear for your San An rides.  Ice Cream Hill fixed is a real treat.  The truth is I enjoy my fixed up there better than the gearie.  I do get some strange looks in the ballfield parking lot though.  The only problem is that it effs with your leg speed.  But I counteract it with ss in the dirt.  Lot's of leg speed involved in that.

Or were you referring to a Ridley MTB??????

It would be hard to choose between a 29er hardtail or 29er ss rigid.  I have both and love to ride both of them.

If I was allowed another big purchase bike it would be a DW Turner RFX or a DW Turner Flux.

I am partial to Turner as that is what I currently have and I am very satisfied with the quality, plushness and ability to climb.   ;D

If I could only have 1 bike it would be FS 26'er.

after trying hardtail 26er's(2), hardtail 29er(1), and Full Suspension 26er's(4), I would choose the later. I have not tried Full suspension 29er, but did not feel the 29" wheels gave me much benefit over 26" wheels on the HT, so not interested in experimenting anymore.. I just Bought an 09' Giant Trance X3 and love it...
