Because One9 was not on sale also Garry and Wes makes fun of my Air9 with a ghetto SS making crazy noise ;D

The real answer is....mtbers ride with gears because it is EASIER and PAINLESS. Blings compensates and enhances one's ability to ride, a typical "instant gratification" attitude  inherent to a typical mtbers. Bike related improvements are made to better the experience of riding, since either mtber dude is incapable of riding a basic bike or the bike can no longer match the rider's riding style.

If God wanted us to ride single speed he would not have given us gears... Ditto on Shocks...

Best answer ever! Well put Darrin.

Cause there is no suspension, a good ss would have about 3" at both ends.

That is like saying only the best drivers can drive a 4 speed transmission with no air... "Oh I really like having my bones rattle when I hit roots and rocks, and I really like spinning my feet like a bugs bunny cartoon, it makes me stronger".. yeah right... :)

In every facet of a sport your going to have extremes.

AND everyone rides for different reasons with different goals.

I ride to challenge and push my comfort level at every opportunity.

riding, a bike in its simplest forms can bring about a challenge, and it can bring about freedom.  Its also alot of fun to beat the guys on full squish with gears when your on a simple machine, one geared suspension less sometime free wheel less machine.

Geared Bike prep and maintenance: check front derailuer, adjust if needed. Check rear derailuer, adjust
if needed. Check air in front fork and add/remove air if needed. Check air in rear shock and add/remove air if needed.
Geared bike riding along the trail: Cling, clack, chain slap, gotta stop for that moss, gotta grind a few gears for that blind climb around the corner. Did I get the right gear?? If not blame it on the gears.....

SS Ridgid Bike prep: lube chain and ride!!!
SS Ridgid Bike riding along the trail: Super quiet, (Need a bell to warn the gearie ahead) ALWAYS in the right gear!!!! 8) 8)

Debate solved.
