Squiggy Race
« on: February 15, 2007, 02:52:08 PM »
Seeing as how me and two of my kids are going to team up for the event and this our first Squiggy race, any suggestions other than just have fun? What to bring, where to have the rest of my family sit, photo ops, etc., tips for the kids 13 &12 yr. olds?

As I understand it, The Squiggy classic is a 10 mile team race, and I'm not sure that more then 1 team member would be aloud on the course at a time. I dont know about you, but if I was 12 and had to do a 10 mile ride with strangers, I'd be pretty freaked out.

I had really wanted to compete in this event, but my old man doesnt want to do it with just a 2 man team, so I'm either on my own or looking for a 3rd man.

They've done the whole loop before and rode it well, including most of the technical trails after the hole in the fence. No problems at the Xmas party either. They do rollercoaster, most of moonscape, and fly on North Creek. They know most of the racing community, locally that is, so that's not a problem. Two way radios make it more safe.  The 12 yr.old actually led a group at the romp chomp when she was 10 . Their Cyclocross experience has helped their confindence  and being self suffient as well. We do twenty plus road rides so the distance doesn't bother them either. Appreciate the input.

Tips:

- Have fun  :)

Looks like they have everything else covered.  Bring spare equipment on the trail, including fuel and let the faster riders go by. Make sure each of you has a secure and quick place to put the team baton (read 'Water Bottle').  You'll need to keep that with you on the trail and pass it to the next rider in the team before they leave.

Think the shell road for picture access, as long as you stay out of the two-way traffic. Traffic is light after the 3rd lap as people spread out but it comes in waves of bikes too.

Thanks Kevan, they know about letting people by( except for their siblings), but I need to inform them about the water bottle. This definately isn't about winning , but having fun and a new experience. They've had enough compitition in th cyclocross races.

Oh yes.  The start of the event is a site to see.

When the starter sends the GO signal
70+ riders run across the parking area headed for their steed to start the event. Strategy here can make a difference too.

Get photos from the trail. Have someone  walk the trail and find good spots for some cool action shots. Not familiar with the course but one shouldn't have to walk too far to get into the trail system.

I think I can make it. I may not be competitive but I'm just out to have fun as well. How about we get together and ride the route together? I can't do it Saturday but maybe Sunday or sometime during the week?

Felix if your looking for a semi competitive partner id love to do it. I think I should be able to do a good 10 mph each lap at least.
