Huge gators on sunday
« on: February 17, 2010, 07:00:32 AM »
We saw some huge gators on sunday laying out in the sun.  There were some other people there who took pics of the biggest wild gator I have seen so far.  Monsters.  I had my dog with me so I didn't venture too close.  If you saw them and took pics, please post.

The eclark I've ridden with a few times would have seen them as obstacles  ;)

i saw huge gator in wierdest place.  he was on the access trail that runs from ridgeline to the abysses. how he got there I have no clue but he was clearly lost and distressed.   Icouldnt get around him so i ended up having to take sidewinder backwards.

On 3-6-10 We saw about six  18 foot gators . One was in the trail and some were across the lake coming towards us.

They were all obviously very well fed and the biggest I've ever seen in my life by a large margin. These monsters were even bigger than the ones at Busch Gardens. Very scary and awe inspiring in real life.

Not trying to bust your chops 'cause I wasn't there and I'm not bringing a tape with me, but:

Myth: Alligators can grow to enormous proportions, over 20 feet in length and weighing a ton or more.

Fact: The longest recorded length for an alligator is 19' 2'. This animal was trapped in the early 1900's in the State of Louisiana. Most wild alligators do not get above 13 feet in length, and may weigh 600 pounds or more.

And another source:

A record length for the alligator species, recorded during the 19th century, measured 19 feet; however, today's big males rarely reach 14 feet.

Hmmm....makes me wonder what else you might think is bigger than it actually is ;)

Grins,

Jennifer

I'm 6' tall and the gators were more than twice as long as me as big around as a large tree trunk. They looked like dinosaur gators from millions of years ago. My estimation was about 18 feet but I certainly didn't try to measure or weigh them. They were frickin' emormous. I'm used to 6' to 10' gators. These were giants!!!!!!

Someone send me an e-mail addy and I've give you video too.

I think we need to get MonsterQuest to come out and look for these mythical 18ft gators. 12-13ft I'd believe, but 18?

The one I saw at Boyette was the same spot as Kobes video, I thought it was around 12 - 13 ft but by far the widest girthiest I had ever seen and could have been 14-15.  Prehistoric horror story was what I was thinking.

I forgot to mention that these are the southwestern "long tailed" hybrid sub species of Florida Alligators.
